The Murphy Family

Well, we have made our maiden voyage on The Chemotherapy and the ride was a little bumpy.  We started on Tuesday around 4 pm and by the middle of the night all sorts of bodily fluids were happening all over.  We have to wear thick gloves and protect ourselves from the fluids because of the chemo.  That makes me sad to think about.  We don't want it to harm us but we are pumping Logan full of it.  So...as my dad would say...then don't think about it.  So, I don't.  He hasn't really kept anything down until just now at lunch.  He slept for 17 hours last night and is now feeling great it seems.  So, now we kind of know what to plan for for next time.  His second round of chemo is on Monday and will continue every Monday for the next 5 weeks until we evaluate for possible surgery or more chemo.  Luckily though, only chemo 1 and 4 of this round have the drugs that really do a number on him.  So, it should go smoother next time. ...

     So, after a long weekend of wondering what type of cancer Logan has, the docs told us today that they believe it is a variant of the Wilms tumor called Blastemal Wilms Tumor (sp?).  It typically responds well to chemo and is in the "more favorable" category.  This news is such a relief.  We are obviously up against many issues and things that could go wrong in this long process, but today we got great news and we are very happy.  We got lots of answers about the treatment as well.      Today, Logan had his power port placed (his line to access his veins, like a pic line, but placed completely under the skin on his chest. When they need to access it they put a needle into the skin where the port is and there is tubing coming out kind of like an IV or any other type of line.  However, when it is not "accessed" you can't see anything on the outside at all.  So weird. On Tuesday Logan had an ultrasound to check out a weird lump on his stomach that the doc thought might be a hernia.  I took Davis with me thinking it would be a short visit.  Well, after a very long and quiet ultrasound, and the tech going out a few times, I got the hunch that things were not looking good.  The radiologist came and told me my doctor was going to call me and to go into a room to wait.  I knew things were not good at this point.  I asked the radiologist to tell me what was going on and he said they found something unexpected.  Total shock, fear and dizziness.  I talked to my doc and he told me it was cancer and that he was so sorry.  Nothing prepares you for that.  It felt like an out of body experience kind of.  I called Dan and told him to come right away and that it wasn't good. He had a very long drive to Primary Children's.  So, we spent the rest of the day at the hospital doing tests.  Scans, x-ray, EKG, bl...
